Jovica Stanisic will have to pay slightly less than half a million dollars for the costs of his defense, the Registry decided, having evaluated the real and persona property of the accused.
The Registry has determined that the former chief of the Serbian State Security Service owns, together with his wife, a house, an apartment and two garages in Belgrade, plots of land in Mramorak, Nestin and Sesek and two plots in Kajtasova. The vehicles, owned by his wife and son, a Polo Classic and a Grand Cherokee Jeep, were also included in the evaluation of Stanisic's property.
As the decision notes, in addition to their pensions, Stanisic and his wife receive a monthly stipend from the Serbia and Montenegro Assembly.
The Registry has calculated that Stanisic's participation in the costs of his defense, in the course of the pre-trial proceedings and the trial itself, should be precisely US$483, 075. This amount will be deduced from the total amount approved by the Registry for Stanisic's lead counsel, Dutch lawyer Gert-Jan Knoops and his assistant Wayne Jordash from London. The average monthly bill for the defense per accused is about US$25,000.
Jovica Stanisic has been indicted together with Franko Simatovic for crimes that the police and paramilitary forces controlled by the Serbian State Security Service committed in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1991 and 1995.
