NOTHING TO REPORT IN STANISIC’S AND ZUPLJANIN’S CASE

A status conference in the appellate proceedings in the case against former Bosnian police minister Mico Stanisic and Banja Luka region police chief Stojan Zupljanin was held today. The decision on the motion to amend the appellate briefs will be delivered in due course

At a regular status conference in the appellate proceedings, former Bosnian Serb political officials Mico Stanisic and Stojan Zupljanin said they didn’t have any complaints about the conditions in the detention unit. Stanisic and Zupljanin also noted that they didn’t have any health problems.

The prosecution and the defense did not have any issues to raise at the status conference either. Judge Theodor Meron recalled that both accused had sought permission to amend their appellate briefs and to tender into evidence a private letter written by Judge Frederik Harhoff. Stanisic and Zupljanin want to use the letter as proof of Judge Harhoff’s bias against the accused. Judge Harhoff was a member of the Trial Chamber that in March 2013 sentenced Stanisic and Zupljanin to 22 years in prison for the crimes against Croats and Muslims throughout BH in 1992.

The decision on the motion will be rendered in due course. The defense’s motion to stay the appellate proceedings and to declare a mistrial because of Judge Harhoff’s alleged bias was dismissed last week. It was indicated that Judge Harhoff’s bias would be considered in the course of the regular appellate proceedings.
